The gradually rising edge of the Freedom Scoop Plate functions like an extra hand to push food over onto utensils. This is especially useful for people who only have enough strength to eat with one hand.

A firm foundation is everything

Furthermore, the no-slip, no-spill vacuum pad keeps the plate from sliding for people who cannot hold their plate still with their other hand. Many people may be surprised at how much plates slide around when one does not have the use of both hands to hold them still. With the Suction Pad Base, which comes with all Freedom Dinnerware plates and bowls, the user can eat thick steak with a fork, rest their hand on the side of the plate, or even pry sticky food off the plate without having to deal with the plate moving around. This makes a huge difference for the user. The vacuum pad can be easily moved and repositioned by lifting one of the corners, but it will stay firmly in place when the user is eating.

Dimensions that are fit for eating

The high side of the Freedom Scoop Plate’s edge measures 4 and 3/4 inches high. People with disabilities like stroke, Parkinson’s disease, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and arthritis often find it very hard to manipulate scoops, especially with one hand. The edge of the Scoop Plate makes this exponentially easier.

The low side, which measures 1 and 3/4 inches high, allows for easy access to the food. It may be hard for some disabled individuals to dip their hand down into a plate that has high edges all the way around. The low side of the Freedom Scoop Plate allows them to begin the scoop easily and finish on the high side.

The whole plate is 9 inches wide — just enough to fit a hardy meal but not too big for disabled people to use.

Many safeguards to protect against messes at dinnertime

The extended rim on the lip of the plate works as yet another safeguard to keep food from getting on the table. It also makes it easier for people with disabilities to hold the plate, pick it up or carry it as the need may arise.

How to use and take care of the Freedom Scoop Plate

The plate without the Suction Pad Base can be microwaved and washed on the top rack of a dishwasher. The Suction Pad Base cannot be microwaved and should be washed by hand.

The plate can be screwed onto the no-slip, no-spill vacuum pad like a jam-jar lid. Since the user should not microwave the vacuum pad, the plate should be heated before putting it on the vacuum pad, or the user may want to place the plate on the vacuum pad and transfer the heated food from another plate.
